Public school taught me that numbers were for counting. Sure you could add them, subtract them, multiply them, divide them, or use them in complex mathematical equations. You could use them as a measurement of how much things weigh, or to determine how large or small an area may be. Don’t get me wrong, you can do a lot with numbers, but little did I know that numbers could be used to gain insight into realms that I didn’t even know existed.
What are Numbers?
According the the dictionary, a number is a numeral or a series of numerals used for reference or identification, a symbol or word used to represent a number, and a member of the set of positive integers; one of a series of symbols of unique meaning in a fixed order that can be derived by counting.
To the numerologist, numbers are different from figures. Numbers operate on the spiritual plane, while figures are for measuring things on the material plane.
Numbers represent universal principles through which all things evolve and continue to grow in cyclic fashion. The digits 1 through 9 symbolize the stages through which an idea must pass before it becomes a reality.
What is Numerology?
It wasn’t until I began to study Metaphysics, the branch of philosophy that examines the nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, fact and value, that I learned that numbers could be used for more than just counting, measuring, or weighing things. Numbers also have a symbolic quality which may be used to convey multiple meanings. In Hindu numbers are thought to be the primary substance of the universe. Numbers are the origin of all things, and they may be used to reveal the underlying harmony of the Universe.
According to the “Dictionary of the Esoteric” by Nevill Drury Numerology is the occult system of thought that analyzes the symbolism of numbers and ascribes numerical values to the letters of the alphabet.
Numbers are the metaphysicians tool for measuring power, vibration, frequency, manifestation, cycles, and patterns.
By learning how to recognize the esoteric nature of numbers you can use them to numerically decode the world around you.

Basic Number Facts
According to the universal principle of gender, everything has gender, that is masculine and/or feminine qualities, including numbers. Odd numbers are considered Masculine, Yang energy. While even numbers are considered Feminine, Yin energy. Prime numbers are considered the ultimate Masculine numbers.
Mathematically and symbolically there are both NEGATIVE and POSITIVE numbers. A negative number is considered to be less than zero (0), while a positive number is greater than zero (0).
Basic Universal Number Correspondence
Zero 0. The nothing, and yet the “everything.”
One 1. The Oneness of all, the individual.
Two 2. Duality, balance, separation.
Three 3. The spirit, communication, wisdom.
Four 4. The Earth, solidity, understanding, order.
Five 5. Harmony, justice, protection, love.
Six 6. Marriage, union of male and female, balance of opposites.
Seven 7. Spirituality, the occult, intelligence.
Eight 8. Eternity and infinity, justice, current, currency.
Nine 9. The limited and the limitless, experience and virtue, completion.
Ten 10. Death and rebirth. Perfection.
Esoteric Numerology
Beyond counting numbers may also be used to gain insight into spiritual and mythological texts such as the Torah, the Bible, the Koran. The key to using numbers to decode the texts aforementioned is the understanding that underpinning the written language of letters, words, and sentences are numbers, through the universal principle of correspondence.

One of the basic rules of numerology states that every letter has a numerological equivalent and vibration. The English alphabet is an alpha numeric system. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, and each letter corresponds to its number, i.e., a=1, b=2, c=3, etc.

Decoding the Bible
Numbers can be used to decode the Bible, the Old Testament in particular, through the use of the system of numerology known as “gematria.” Gematria may be loosely defined as Hebrew Numerology although Gematria can also be used for Dream Interpretation and Divination.
Gematria uses the numerical equivalent of the Hebrew letters and words to reveal hidden correspondences and relationships between Biblical people, places or things to high spiritual metaphysical concepts.
Gematria was used by medieval cabalists for Biblical interpretation and as a means of encoding sacred, and secret information within the scriptures.
Some great books you could use as reference for decoding the numbers in the Bible include: “Godwin’s Cabalistic Encyclopedia” by David Godwin, “The Complete Magician’s Tables” by Stephen Skinner, and “Three Books of Occult Philosophy” by Henry Cornelius Agrippa.
Gematria Correspondence Chart
Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a predetermined numerical equivalent. “In numerology, gematria is the practice of assigning a numerical value to a name, word or phrase by reading it as a number, or sometimes by using an alphanumerical cipher. The letters of the alphabets involved have standard numerical values, but a word can yield several values if a cipher is used.” Wikipedia
Using Gematria the sum of the values of the letters in a word are used to make connections with other words that have the same sum. For example lets examine two seemingly unrelated scriptures to see if we can find a connection.
Numbers 21: 5-9 “And Moses made a serpent of Brass and put it on a pole.
John 12:32 “And I, if I be lifted up from the Earth, will draw all men unto Me.”
The Hebrew word for serpent, נָחָשׁ, Nachash (NChSh) has the same numerical equivalent, [358,] as the word for messiah, מָשִׁיחַ, “mashiach” (MShYCh.) This equivalence reveals a mirror image correspondence between the two.

While Gematria may be used to decode the Old Testament portion of the Bible, the New Testament was written in Greek. In order to numerically decode the New Testament scriptures the Greek system of numerology would be more appropriate. Greek numerology, or isopsephy, is the practice of assigning numerical values to letters and words using the Greek alphabet.

In order to decode spiritual texts written in Arabic, the Abjad system is used. According to Wikipedia, “The Abjad numerals, also called Hisab al-Jummal (Arabic: حِسَاب ٱلْجُمَّل, ḥisāb al-jummal), are a decimal alphabetic numeral system/alphanumeric code, in which the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet are assigned numerical values. They have been used in the Arabic-speaking world since before the eighth century when positionalArabic numerals were adopted.[1] In modern Arabic, the word ʾabjadīyah (أَبْجَدِيَّة) means ‘alphabet‘ in general.
In the Abjad system, the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, ʾalif, is used to represent 1; the second letter, bāʾ, 2, up to 9. Letters then represent the first nine intervals of 10s and those of the 100s: yāʾ for 10, kāf for 20, qāf for 100, ending with 1000.”
Why is Understanding Numerology Personally Important?
Simply put, understanding the numbers that surround you will help you to understand more about yourself and the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of the world and the universe we live in. The student of numerology will find that their esoteric understanding of numbers will be useful in a variety of corresponding metaphysical disciplines such as astrology, tarot, and the kaballah, which was written in Hebrew. Hebrew numerology is called Gematria. Gematria relates words and phrases of the Hebrew language to their corresponding numbers to reveal layers of meaning hidden within the scriptures of the Torah, the Zohar, and the Old Testament scriptures of the Bible which were originally written in Hebrew.

Numbers are with us all from the moment we are born. Our birthday is represented by the numbers of the month, day, and year in which we were born. Our first, middle, and last names are made up of letters which correspond to numbers. If you live in the U.S. you are also assigned a social security number, which is placed on your birth certificate, which is also a numbered document. Furthermore, the numbers corresponding to an individual’s name and birthday may be used to provide valuable insight into the nature of said individuals personality, life’s lessons, path of destiny, soul and more.
