Life and Career

Dr. Jewel Pookrum is a pioneering Afro-American physician, holistic health advocate, and author who became a transformative leader in integrative and holistic medicine for Afro-Americans. Bridging the gap between conventional and alternative healing, she seamlessly combined modern medical practices with natural and holistic modalities to promote whole-body wellness. Her contributions to the medical field, specifically, her dedication to Afro-American health and wellness are enormous, and have brought both healing and awareness to many.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Pookrum grew up in a family that deeply valued education and community service. Her early exposure to health disparities in her neighborhood ignited her passion for medicine and inspired her lifelong mission to improve wellness in underserved communities.

Dr. Pookrum became disillusioned with the mainstream medical field when she came to the realization that the American medical industry tended to focus exclusively on Caucasian biology, and physiology which they used as a baseline for measuring the relative health of all their patients regardless of race or cultural background. “When I came into the awareness that the western medical standard of health chemically is based on the blood chemistry of the Caucasian male and female, and the physiology and anatomy of the Caucasian, male and female, it was quite obvious that I could never experience optimal health care when measured by a standard that belongs to another race.” Vitamins and Minerals From A to Z p. 2

Over the course of her remarkable career, Dr. Pookrum focused on preventive care, nutrition, and holistic healing, advocating for natural remedies and addressing the root causes of illness rather than merely treating symptoms. Her patient-centered philosophy empowered individuals to take an active role in their health.

Carter G Woodson – Miseducation of the Negro

The MisEducation of the Negro by Carter G Woodson belongs among the list of “must-reads” for every African American household. First published in 1933, the information in this book (sadly) is just as relevant today as it was then. At its heart this book is about the deplorable state of the educational system as it relates to African Americans, and is centered around the lack of authentic African/African American history in schools.
